Los tintes son objetos de un solo uso que obtendremos a lo largo del juego. Introducido en Diablo III, el sistema de tintes nos permitirá personalizar el color de las principales piezas de equipo de nuestro personaje.
Podremos emplearlos en cualquier momento sobre una pieza de armadura, la cual cambiará su color al del tinte empleado sobre ella. Hay una amplia variedad de tintes confirmados (20), y no todos serán igual de comunes. Un tinte rojo común puede ser fácil de encontrar, pero tal vez un rojo oscuro aparezca con mucha menos frecuencia.
Una vez empleemos un tinte sobre un objeto, éste desaparecerá. Por tanto, en caso de que queramos tintar un varios objetos de un set del mismo color, necesitaremos un tinte para cada uno de ellos.
No han sido confirmadas aún las piezas de equipo sobre las cuales podremos aplicar tintes. Las armaduras para torso y pantalones son muy probables, así como cascos. Posiblemente también sean aplicables a botas, guantes, brazaletes, cinturones y/o hombreras.
Todo objeto que pueda ser tintado tendrá definidas una serie de zonas las cuales se verán afectadas por el tinte empleado. Esto significa que un tinte azul no teñirá de azul todo el objeto sobre el que sea aplicado por igual, sino que el color del tinte se combinará con el aspecto original del objeto para crear una imagen más realista. Igualmente, solo podrá aplicarse un tinte simultáneamente sobre un mismo objeto, por lo que emplear un segundo tinte hará que se pierda el tinte que haya sido empleado anteriormente.
También existe un borrador de tinte para devolver el objeto a su estado original, y un tinte especial que vuelve el objeto invisible.
Los tintes no otorgarán bonificadores al objeto sobre el que se apliquen. Son un complemento meramente estético.
